Microsoft’s Windows 8 Fails to Spur PC Sales As Buyers Opt For Smartphones, Tablets

Microsoft needs to rethink its Windows strategy, says IDCApple fared better than rivals in U.S. PC market.

Personal computer shipments fell 13.9 percent in the first quarter, more than the 7.7 percent drop predicted, after consumers opted to spend their money on smartphones and tablets and Microsoft’s new Windows 8  ”weak reception” failed to spur PC sales.

Global PC shipments fell to 76.3 million, down from 88.6 million a year ago, market researcher IDC said today. It was the fourth straight quarter of PC declines on a year-over-year basis. The U.S. market had a “dismal quarter” with a 12.7 percent drop in shipments to 14.2 million machines, which is the lowest number of PCs sold  since the first quarter of 2006.

“It seems clear that the Windows 8 launch not only failed to provide a positive boost to the PC market, but appears to have slowed the market,” IDC analyst Bob O’Donnell said in the statement. “While some consumers appreciate the new form factors and touch capabilities of Windows 8, the radical changes to the UI, removal of the familiar Start button, and the costs associated with touch have made PCs a less attractive alternative to dedicated tablets and other competitive devices. Microsoft will have to make some very tough decisions moving forward if it wants to help reinvigorate the PC market.”

Hewlett-Packard remained the top seller of PCs in the world, even as its shipments plunged 23.7 percent. Lenovo was ranked No. 2 worldwide, with shipments unchanged. Dell, which is trying to go private after CEO Michael Dell‘s turnaround efforts have failed to revive sales and profit, took the No. 3 spot even with a 10 percent drop in shipments amid “uncertainty about the direction of its restructuring,” IDC said.

Apple, which ranks third in the U.S., fared better than its rivals with a 7.5 percent drop in shipments. That compares to a 12.7 percent decline for the U.S. industry overall. Among the biggest competition for the Mac: Apple’s own iPad tablets.

***(Updated, Incredible!)***

Hello fellow artists, filmmakers and photographers. It seems like big companies have decided to take their exploitation on us to a higher level. Here are some examples:If you apply for a job at Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) you automatically give the company the rights to use any material you submit (demos, drawings, etc.) http://mayersononanimation.blogspot.com/2012/11/more-artist-exploitation.htmlAll photo and video contests come with a fine print that gives companies all the rights to use your material upon its submission.

Intel had their “Momentary Lapse” photo and video competition last year and they ended up with thousands of free photos and hundreds of minutes of video footage that they can use for commercial purposes whenever they want.

The Smithsonian Institute and Sesame Street currently have new contests under the same conditions.

Do you really think that Sony Pictures, Intel, The Smithsonian and Sesame Street don’t have enough money to pay artists for the material they submit when it’s used?

If we don’t boycott these blood-sucking practices nobody will do it for us.

And did you hear what Jay Leno recently said?
“Well, you know, the whole legend of St. Patrick, right?” Leno said. “St. Patrick drove all the snakes out of Ireland, and then they came to the United States and became NBC executives.”

*** Update ***
The latest is a grant contest by Burn Magazine that will give $15,000 to whom they consider the best “emerging” photographer. They say the money will be given by “anonymous” sponsors but guess what? They are charging $25 to apply. If you do the math 600 applicants X $25 = $15,000. This is just incredible.

@MagnumPhotos @Burn_Magazine applications for a grant should be free, especially when the call is for emerging photographers.

Two-Headed Bull Shark Confirmed Rarest in the World

By March 28, 2013

Imagine Jaws  through the eyes of director Guillermo del Toro, and maybe you get something like this: a two-headed shark that’d be right at home in something like “Pan’s Labyrinth 2: The Ocean Blue.”

According to the Journal of Fish Biology, where research on the incredibly rare find was published, it’s in fact the only recorded instance of dicephalia — the scientific term for a fetus with two heads — in a bull shark. The shark was discovered inadvertently by a fisherman working in the Gulf of Mexico who caught an adult bull shark on April 7, 2011, then extracted the two-headed fetus after opening the uterus. The shark died shortly after being removed — experts say it stood little chance of surviving had it been born naturally.

Michigan State University — which led the study alongside Florida Keys Community College that eventually confirmed the shark was in fact a single organism and not a set of conjoined twins — noted the reason for its rarity is that creatures born with this sort of abnormality tend to die shortly after birth.

“You’ll see many more cases of two-headed lizards and snakes,” said MSU assistant professor of fisheries and wildlife, Michael Wagner. “That’s because those organisms are often bred in captivity, and the breeders are more likely to observe the anomalies.”

In this case, those anomalies included the axial skeleton and internal organs dividing into parallel systems, including “two well-developed” heads. Yes, you’re forgiven for shuddering at the phrase “two well-developed heads.”

What caused the mutation? It’s all guesswork at this point, but don’t assume it had something to do with the 2010 BP oil drilling catastrophe. According to Wagner, “Given the timing of the shark’s discovery with the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, I could see how some people may want to jump to conclusions … Making that leap is unwarranted. We simply have no evidence to support that cause or any other.”
